Default simple camshaft question

What cams would be good N/A and with a blower?

My plan is after my engine rebuild to run it N/A a while to break it in and save up for the blower. Is there any camshaft that would be good in both cases? Looking for around 400rwhp after blower, maybe 300rwhp before

I'm not to the camshafts phase of my modifications, no point in camming the 2v if I'm getting rid of it

Anyway, get a stage 2 of whatever variety... Or, you can have one custom-ground, I'm not sure of shops that will do this, VTEngines may, but as I said, I haven't looked into this at all. If you find a shop willing to give you a custom grind, tell them what you want, and they can get you a cam for it.

You'd be better off buying for your application. Hence the whole concept of buying cams for n/a engines, and buying seperate ones for F/I. The best cams for both, are your stock ones. Wait until you decide on your route before buying cams. And if you decide to get the blower, buy it, then worry about the cams later so you can get F/I cams.

If you are never planning on building the shortblock, then a set of N/A cams will be fine. You will make lots more power with a stage 1 or 2 n/a cam and a blower than you will with the stock cams and a blower.

it only gets to be a problem if you install a shortblock and try to make big numbers (re: more boost). The overlap on the cams is too great and it does not allow you to build boost like you should (at that powerlevel).

If your only wanting 400~ WHP or a little more you don't need a aftermarket shortblock, and you don't need to worry about running n/a cams vs supercharger cams.

BTW, your car will run OK on blower cams while n/a, its just not the greatest setup. It will probalby make more power than the stock cams, but you won't see any spectacular gains n/a (not that you really do anyway)

couldnta stated that much better. I am reasonably sure that blower cams would get me more power, but how close to that line do you want to get with the stock internals? It would get me closer and i would rather do an i/c than switch cams. But hey, if you can afford both, switch em out. I have too heard that blower cams do well n/a if you are peicing it together.

Yeah, I don't think people realise how easy it is to push the limits of the stock shortblock.

A set of N/a cams and the regular boltons, plus a 10 PSI blower will definatly have you there. Hell, I am still running the stock vortech intake (instead of the power pipe) and I have timing pulled out of the car to limit horsepower. There is literally another 20~ or so WHP in my tune by going a little more lean and advancing the timing, but why not run a safe tune you don't have to worry about?

How are F/I cams different from N/A cams?

well my stock heads are messed up, and i'm not gonna go through a lot of trouble to fix/replace these heads and add a blower, when I could take my time and make a complete engine that could handle it. I think i'll get the blower cams and run it with those while I break in the motor and then strap on the blower.
