electrical problems

I have a 97 GT and my batteries not holding a charge. I think therre might be a problem with the alternator?? I dont know for sure though and i need some ideas of what might be wrong with it and how to fix it.
any advise would help,

you could start it and then pull the pos terminal on the battery(this is not recommended), or just check the voltage on the battery and the alt, if the battery is less than say 9 volts, bad, run it and check again, if goes up and reaches 14 or so good alt, turn off and check the bat and watch the voltage if it drops might be bat or something draining it from you elec system
