WTF? The last owner lost the manual so I havn't read it yet. But that is weird. Might as well try it though, if thats what it says.

i always do 5th then reverse. Or just let off the pedal and try again. Always works after a while.

Yeah, mine goes into reverse if I just let it roll a little bit...I'm talking like maybe an inch back or forth and reverse goes right in.

 

Sometimes I have to put it in first, and move an inch or two. Then it will slide right into R. T45 = Gay.

everyone has there own special way of getting it into 5th gear on the 02-04 5sp Mustang trannys. Kinda different from every car. I find that if I yell at my car in a loud angry voice and threaten to trade her in for a 05+ Mustang or a 03/04 Cobra, she listens. Weird huh?

Justa an FYI -- the reverse gear doesn't have synchro -- it's just straight cut gears engaging. The input/output shafts must be spinning at same RPM for gears to mesh easily, otherwise they grind or don't engage at all.

 

I had this problem too in the past. I found that parking it in 1st instead of neutral for me helped alot, but the problem still persists every once in awhile. I am just glad to know I am not the only one with this problem.
