Default water in floorboards

Ok, I just bought a 97 gt and when I lift up the floor mats, there is water in on the floor. No where else, just the driver and passenger floor boards. It is satuarated, but it is enough to tell that it is wet. It is also making the car smell kind of musty. I had this problem with a previous car and I was told it was the a/c system being backed up. I don't know if this is the case right now, the a/c works great. Any ideas? I am big on a car smelling good and this is going to drive me nuts.

Check your heater core...

Could be a/c, could be heater core, could be the car leaks when it rains.
Good luck.

How do I check the heater core? For that matter, how do I check the a/c to see if it is leaking? I am not good with the climate control systems in cars.

if it was the AC , it would probably only leak(not positive on that but pretty sure) on passenger side where drain is . AC /heater stuff is on passenger side . check under carpet & make sure there are no hole anywhere .

How do I check under the carpet? Is there a way to lift it up that I am not seeing?

If it a/c its just water. If its a heater core it should have antifreeze in it.

you'll have to take out kick panels & plastic trim beside the seats (not sure what that piece is called ) . pull carpet back starting up by front pedals . you wont be able to pull all the way back but it should be enough to see .
