Default Fuel Cap?

I have an 03 GT. It has 64K miles. Yesterday the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on. Today the "Check Fuel Cap" light comes on. So, I checked it and it's on properly. Can these things go bad? Anyone experience such a thing?

Thanks in advance,

It could be anything connected to the fuel tank is leaking. Not a lot,but enough to set off the light.Do you smell gasoline when the car is shut off?If so it could be anything from the grommet around the filler tube to any number of hoses.Look for tears, nicks, and rubbed or pinched spots.

Same thing happened to me around the same mileage too interestingly. Turned out to be a leak in the evaporator system. $380 and a crappy trip to the dealership later all was well.

Ouch $380?

Well, the code came back to do with fuel cap. We reset the code and installed a new cap. 2 days later...same thing. Fortunately it stayed off long enough for me to get it inspected.

After 2 resets and 2 caps...it's back on. It must be leaking somewhere else as the other posters said. It ain't worth $380 to me to fix. I can live with it for a while. Maybe it'll realize I don't care and give up.

Thanks for the help

I'm getting something similar too, throwing code: P0442 Evaporateve Emission, System Leak Detected (small leak)
Don't know what's up with it yet though either.
