New tranny?

New tranny?
When I drive my GT and shift from first to second, there is kind of a banging sound when it goes into gear. This only happens when I am shifting fast, either moving or not. I can feel when it happens, it's a little bump from the tranny. Does anyone know what this is? My car is a 97 GT completly stock (for now). Do I just need a new shifter?
Also, does anyone know if the gear ratio for the sixth gear in a cobra is different from the fifth gear in my GT? I ask because I might consider getting a six speed from a cobra if I need to replace my tranny. Also, and more importantly, does the six speed help my gas mileage? I use this as my daily driver and make 600 mile round trips about twice a month; so I need the gas mileage to stay the same.
Any input on either of these subjects would be great. Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: New tranny?
I would check your fluid level first. You have a T45 tranny which stock, is not one of Ford's proudest moments. May be your synchros going but idk for sure.
Yes, you will have a different gear ratio in the six speed(Tremec T56). Actually, that is a pretty expensive swap. Depending on what your plans are for the car, you may want to look into a TKO tranny also. Either will be nice but the T56 is just a much more expensive project.

RE: New tranny?
How much would it be to replace the stock tranny for a six speed? I haven't looked into it much, so if someone knows off the top of your head, great.
Also, let's say that I replace the transmission fluid and that doesn't work. How do I check the syncros? Is there any way to do it? And are you saying that replacing the shifter isn't going to come close to fixing the problem?

RE: New tranny?
You could TRY the shifter but from the sound of it, I dont think that will help any. It is hard to diagnose over the web you know.
As far as a T56
- T56 w/ bellhousing 2200-2500 for basic Cobra tranny and more for Viper spec(has to have mechanical speedo in it)
- new clutch 200-400 depending on your power and your plans for car
- new flywheel approx. 200-400 depending on if you want steel or aluminum flywheel(lighter)
- install varies depending on if you can do it yourself or have to take it to a shop
- possibly shifter approx. 180 This is only neccessary if you want to go all out. If you replace the one you have now, it will not be
compatible w/ the new T56.
So, in conclusion, you are looking at a minimum of about 2600 dollars+ if you do a T56. I was guessing low to so I would say that you are in reality going closer to 3k. (I have been doing research on my setup as well to keep T45, drop in TKO, or drop in T56.) I have just found from pricing that the T56 is the most costly route.
