Default shifter base/handle??

My car has a kona short throw handle on it, but not an aftermarket shifter base. What exactly does the base do? Would getting a complete handle/base set (e.g. MGW), benefit me more than now? I'm not asking about brands in particular, I just mean the fact of having an aftermarket base and handle over a stock base with just aftermarket handle. Whats the base actually do?

I can't see how you'd fit the handle on the stock base...

Base is on the right, the handle is on the left. The base makes the biggest difference.

It is the base that gives you the improved shifts, the handle itself was probobly installed to do away with the stock trucker shifter, and its unsightly heigth. I did the tremec handle on my gf's v6 just becasue she wanted the look without the cost.

I dunno what the previous owner did, all he said was there is a handle, but no base. Sometimes its hard to shift into first and it seems sticky. Should I invest in MGW? I want butter smooth shifts.

No question. Get the MGW. You still have the long travel with your stock base on your car, which sucks. The MGW shifter is absolutely awsome! A world of difference. Th distance between the gears is dramatically sorter and shifting to third is quite a bit easier. Just shell out the money for it and you won't look back. No one else here has regreted it yet.

Thats what I hear, my main concern is my shift feasibility. I really want it to just slip right into gear, sometimes it feels sticky, will it be really really smooth? And is the handle of the MGW pretty short, or is it medium length? Because my handle is really low and I like it low like that.

The handle of the MGW is pretty low. I don't have one in my 97 GT yet, and I sometimes think it will be too low for me to reach. Then again, I doubt it. You won't have a problem with the handle length. As for the shifting, I don't know. I don't think that has so much to do with the shifter as it does with your tranny. What year is your stang? All the shifter is going to do is pop on top of that rod comming out of the transmission and put it into the gears the same as any other one would, just faster. Look at the other posts that have to do with shifters. Everyone says get the MGW because they love it so much, I will be one of them here in a little bit. I have played with my buddies' cars that have both the steeda tri-ax and the MGW and the MGW is MUCH shorter. The handle is smaller than the steeda too. Trust me, you'll love it.

Okay thanks for the advice, I have a 2001 GT. I think I have the T45 tranny; I just missed the TR3650.
