Default timing problem? please help

so i recently replaced the headgasket on my car. it ran fine before and now when i start it it just dies with the custom tune i have. when i tuned it back to stock, it will idle but it's really rough and it's running unbelievabley rich. i've check and rechecked all sensors and connections and the only thing i can think of is the timing isn't right. do u think this could be my problem? now i havn't done timing before but i can figure it out. i just need a timing light? how exactly does it work and how do i know what the timing should be. i just cant believe that the timing is wrong when i followed every step. any help would be appreciated.

Did you change the head gaskets yourself? Are you sure you reinstalled the chains correctly? Did you bring the motor to TDC when reinstalling the distributer? More info is needed to really help you out.

Default RE: timing problem? please help

or does anyone know a website where I can find install instructions for timing chains or camshaft installs that would show how to do the timing?
