Default rear end noise

on my 96 GT i have had a howling sound coming from the rear-end, i was told it was just the gears not aligned right. Lately i noticed a grinding sound but it only does it when i turn to the left and have driven at highway speeds for about an hour. I have had the cover off a few times and everything seems ok but the inside of my axle shafts seem to be blueing from what i think is heat. I think it may be the limited slip failing on me but it still burns both tires. Does anyone have any ideas that might help me out?

Well if the whining went to grinding that isnt good, espically if the gears arent aligned properly. Sometimes they can eat them selves up in a matter of days. I would take it in and see whats going on.

Don't put it off, have check it out. My friends Jeep rear end was making noise and a day before he was going to check it out it went into pieces. Now it's going to cost him $2k just for the parts.

His wife is not so happy about it b/c he was already plaining to put a Ford 9" under it (2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport w/ a 4" lift and 35" tires), but not that soon and not that way.

Supercharged96Gt,
I have a 97 GT 5spd and I notice not all but sometimes when making a left turn like say in a parking lot, I hear the grinding sound you speak of. I had a differential gasket put on to stop a leak about 5mos ago and the mechnic did not mention anything about bad gears. Interested to know what this could be.

I am almost sure it is the stock limited slip that is failing. my gears that i had put in were fine for atleast 2 years. It all started when i got the car back from putting a bunch more power adders on at the shop. I took the car out and was beating the crap out of it. I dumped the clutch at like 5 grand and just spun everwhere for about 20 feet till i blew a elbow connected to my intercooler. Eversince then the car howls going down the road. The last time i took the rear-end cover off i noticed that the spider gears are pretty loose in there, when you move the tires the gears are sliding up and down when they should be just turning. Also the gears have little lines in all the teeth running down each one. I am ordering a locker so i will let ya know if it fixes it. Oh and also when the car is on the lift I am pretty sure most cars you spin one tire the other one rotates the opposite way. well mine both spin the same way and it is fairly hard to stop one from spining.
