In regards to the mustangs, it's the type of engine the GTs, mach 1s and cobras use.

I think it's because so many parts are similar between the 4.6s, 5.4s, SOHC and DOHC and some are interchangeable... but the big thing is they are all on the same core design

The Modular engine, or "mod motor" as it is often referred to, is Ford Motor Company's modern overhead camshaft (OHC) V8 and V10 engine family. It gradually replaced the Windsor small-block and 385 big-block engines over several years in the mid-1990s. The engine is modular in that it can be adapted to V8 or V10 with a variety of 2-valve and multivalve heads. It is used in Ford trucks, (called the Triton) in Lincolns (called Intech) and in Ford and Mercury cars. In 2004 Ford introduced a 3-valve SOHC with a Variable Camshaft Timing system, this engine will eventually phase out the 2-valve SOHC, although it has replaced a 4-valve DOHC engine, at least temporarily, in the Lincoln Navigator.

All of fords OHC V8 engines have interchangable parts, and are based on the same basic design.

The 4.6L in the trucks is basically the same design as your 4.6L. The 5.4L shares the same basic setup and some parts with the 4.6L.

This saves ford money, as they don't have to produce 50 different types of heads/blocks/cams etc etc for their engines.

The term modular has absolutly nothing to do with the coil on plug ignition setup.

+1, not all modular engines have a coil over plug setup
