Default Engine Replacement

I am trying to find out if it is a better idea to replace your heads/camshaft in a standard '02 Mustang GT or just replace it with a new crate engine. There are plenty of 302 cid engines that give up to 390hp for about $6000. It would cost $3000 for a set of heads/cams, but would you really get close to 130 extra horsepower from them? And also the crate engine would be a new engine, lasting you another 150k miles or more.

How can you tell what crate engines could be used to replace the 4.6L V8 99-04 Mustang GT engine?

Is the engine's displacement the major factor in determining what crate engine could be used? My '02 engine has a 281 ci displacement; which is smaller than all of the crate engines on ford's website: Crate Engine Reference Guide

Can a 302 cid engine, or even a 351 cid or higher engine fit inside an '02 mustange gt? The M-6007-Z50Z 302 cid engine has 390hp & 360 ft/lb for $6200. The M-6007-C347 351 cid engine has 450hp & 400 ft/lb for $8600. That is an approximatly $47/hp gain for each engine, and on top of that you get a brand new engine out of it.

What kind of work does it take to replace the engine of your mustang? Cost of labor is another factor that could make a new crate engine unreasonable. If it takes alot of other parts to make it work then it might not be worth it, I just do not want to enhance my current engine if I could get better results just getting a new one. I also cannot really find information on how much of a hp/torque gain a new set of heads/cams can give to a standard engine.

All kinds of worms crawling outta than can. You never said what kinda conditon your engine was in. That should have a lot of weight in your decision.

I belive all the engines you metioned will physicallyt fit, it's aqueston of how much in parts (relocation of mounts, dedicated accessories, engine management, etc.)and labor it will take.

The only way to really know how much is to start making phone calls and asking for estmates because there's probably only a few here who have actually done it.

If you can afford it, I say go with a new engine. Streetable H+C will get you anywhere from 30-60 ponies, but if you're gonna do it yourself .

Personally, I get a forged bottom end and get blown....

Just my two cents....

The big question is whether or not you have to go through emission testing. Stick with a Mod motor if you do, or you'll never pass.

Ford does have Modular crates, too.
