If he claims it on his insurance u cant take ANYTHING out of it... my sister totaled her lexus and they wouldnt even let us take out custom speakers that we put in it

Once insurance claims it it's all theirs. I don't know how it would work right now if you snuck over and grabbed things off of it like the shifter, but you'd technically be stealing from the insurance agency.

If you ask the insurance agent where the car is going, maybe you can buy the shifter real cheap from the scrapyard or where ever it ends up.

I wasn't trying to sound like a dick. I hope you understand that. Did you see the whole thing happen in front of you or what is another friend? I think you said it was another friend. Usually insurance companies will let you buy the car back. He can always, or you can buy it from them. It's totalled for sure, that's obvious. I took out a bunch of stuff after I wrecked my S-10 back in 97. The insurance company totaled it out. I have $19,000 in receipts for aftermarket stuff. The wreck wasn't my fault, the other insurance company paid EVERY pennt of all my modifications, because I had those receipts. It doesn't always work that way, but sometimes you get lucky.
