Default simple noob gear question

I have 4.10 gears, that the previous owner put on. But these are "rear end" gears right? I don't know much about gears mechanically. So what does the rear end part actually mean. These aren't the actual gears in the transmission are they?
I know. Noob.

....yea I know what they are called obviously. I'm trying to figure out what a rear end is. And where these "rear end gears" are located in the car. Kinda confused.

your engine spins gears/synchros inside your transmision, when your in "gear" the engine spins the tranny which spins your drive shaft, the drive shaft is connected to your rear end and spins your rear end gear(what your confused about) which is then connected to your tires and makes the car go.

thats as simple as i could make it, just do some google searching and you can find out all the info you need to know.

edit :: [:@] im starting to confuse myself... the alcohol is not helping this

Gears are "rear end gears". They are the ring and pinion in your 8.8" differential.

Actually... connected to the wheel hub thingamagigers... then the wheels... then the tires... wheels are important though... can go nowhere without the wheels! ::dodges punch::

They are gears in your "rear end", your differential. The 4.10s will get you down the drag strip faster but will also give you worse mpg as they take your rpm's up higher than the stock gears would. Also, it will take longer to get to extremely high speeds. I didn't read everyone's posts, so if I just repeated someone, sorry. [8D]

I agree 4.10gears are better for racing, but I stick with my stock gears because it's my daily driver.
With 4.10's 1st gear is a PIA driving in stop-go traffic, it's too short for me.
