Lobe separation is the distance between the intake and exhaust centerlines. Closer lobe separation means more overlap - meaning more lope at idle and a higher powerband. It has nothing to do with shimming the lifters, you should only worry about that with re-ground camshafts or anything that has a cam base circle smaller than stock. Most aftermarket cams you shouldn't have to worry with this - but all experienced engine builders check this reguardless.

what mdvaldosta said. It is the length in time when both the intake and exhaust valves are open. A lower LSA (under 110) will be more for a high revving motor while a 112 and up would have good idle quality down low. Id say a 112 is a good all around LSA. Hope this helps.
