My check engine light came on today. i took it to a shop that the company i work for owns, and they used there computer and it said my number 7 cylinder is missfiring, they told me that i need new plugs and wires. The car only has 56,000 miles on it. They cleared the code and after about 5 miles of driving it popped back up. ANy thoughts or suggestions. What should i do and what is the significance. Not only do i want to know what the problem is but id also liek to learn about it!

prolly need a new coil or plug, pull #7 off and check the plug, replace that first go from there and then coil if that doesn't fix it.

yeah i'd check the plug and make sure the plug boot isn't cracked. if that's fine it could be the coil over plug. i don't think that you have to worry about plug wires..

Sit'n Lo's got it pretty much right on... I would add that if the car has 56,000 miles on it, then it should have already had the plugs and wires changed on it... I know that a lot of folks will say that you can get 100,000 on a tune up... but I beg to differ... At least every couple of years/15,000 miles you should replace those things just to keep your gas milage and such in top form. It is soooo easy to do, and cost relatively cheap, that I don't know why people push something like that... I will suggest that you look at the condition of the plug. That will tell you a lot... Check the engine bay in the dark with the hood light disconnected for any shorting out... If both of those are good, then it will be the coils... while you are at all of this, install a good air filter like the K&N (just a suggestion) and in short order, you'll be in there like swim wear...
