Default 97 stock shifter rattling

I have a 97 gt with the stock shifter and I noticed that when it is cold, it will rattle. Imagine taking a big jug of BB's and slowly pouring them out. That is the soud it makes. Does anyone know what this is?? I really don't have the money for an MGW right now if I don't need it but if this is going to ruin my tranny,I might have to suck it up. Thanks

Cold as in cold outside, or cold as in you drive the car for a while and the sound goes away?

Both, actually. When it is cold outside, the shifter rattles. It goes away after about a half to fourty five minutes of driving. Any ideas??

I'd say first off... get an aftermarket shifter... because it will fix your problem? Nah, because it's a great upgrade.

But seriously, just pull off the shift boot and see if the handle itself is loose. If it is, tighten it up, if it's not, take the inner boot off (8mm? I've done it a thousand times and can't remember), then see if the bolts holding the actual shifter on are loose. If something is rattling it's probably your handle though since the actual shifter is usually pretty stuck on from the factory.
