Default 4.10's - gear whine?

I'm curious among those who've changed their gears who has gear noise and who doesn't and what brand ring and pinion they went with.

I put 4.56's in my truck and they whine. It's tolerable since the axle is under the bed, but I won't tolerate it in a car.

I have done 3.73s twice... once I got whine. I think that is because it was some aftermarket brand (not that they are all bad). It could have been that they were not installed properly (this is most likely the case, as I have had heard the same gear whine in beater cars that have had work done to the rear diff, and not even lower gearing). The one that went off without a hitch was a complete Ford 8.8 rear end... That one is in the car I am currently driving and there are no problems. My vote is for your getting some Ford Racing gears. They are designed for the 8.8 by the people that designed them in the first place... they make 4.10s... how can you go wrong?

If gears are installed correctly and dialed in properly there should be no whine at all.

Richmond are strong gears but I've heard they will whine. I got Motive gears installed in my truck, they whined so I took it back and had the guy redo it. He did, then he showed me what the specs were and what mine were. They were within specs but it was louder after he redid them than the first time I picked it up.

I'm just curious to hear from the 4.10 club. What kind of gears do you have and do they whine...

Thanks.

gears aren't spaced properly.....leave it and you will burn it out. I have 3.73 and they don't make a sound.

its not the gear that makes it whine(most of the time) its usually the install.

I trust the guy who put the gears in my truck - he's been doing it for a long, long, time and he came recommended from guys at work who've been doing this a long time. The gears have been in my truck over a year and they're fine.

The question is - 1) When you did your gear swap what brand gears did you use, and 2) Do they whine?

Thanks.

So far I haven't detected a bit of gear whine from my car. The install seemed to go well and I broke them in...for about 20 miles then gave it hell[sm=badbadbad.gif]

Oh I used FRPP 4.10s by the way[8D]
