Ask who the previous owner was. That's whatI did when I bought mine. Turns out some lady owned it and traded it for a civic. Gas mileage wasn't good enough for her.

Look at the tires for excessive wear, feel the clutch if it's a manual. Don't be afraid to get under the car and look. Remember, you dont need mods to beat on a car.

The first thing I look at when buying a car is the conition of the carpet underneath the gas pedal. People like me leave a hole in the carpet....

check the underbody.
crawl under the car, and literally check everything out.

CAR FAX but not all accidents are reported. When inspecting a car before you buy look at body lines are hood, doors, truck lid, etc to ensure all line are evenly spaced it not you know car has been in an accident. For overspray, aftermarket body panels etc.

When test driving car look for banging with tranny or any funny noises. On a straight road quickly stab breaks to see if car pulls as could be just a front end alignment or bigger issues. Look for leaks oil, etc.

These are just a few things at the top of my head.

Aside from everything else suggested, I say get out there and romp on it a time or two yourself. See if there is any hesitations, irregular noises, etc. Can't deny the fact that you won't drive the **** out of it a time or two during the time that you own it.

Edit: And I suggest finding an open stretch somewhere that is safe if you plan on doing so.
