when I hit 140 in the dry, I had the same thoughts. that and "****, if I try to slow down, I might also die."

I am looking to toss out my lightly driven Nitto 555 Extremes for some better highway tires. I need a tire that will grip and corner well and take speeds in excess of 140mph. I am running a 512 rwhp 02 GT and tend to engage in high speed Bull Runs. As much as I tried,I can't drive this car normally for an extended period of time, duringthefive or sixtimes a month I take it out of the garagefor a joy ride, if you know what I mean....

I was told to buy Toyo Proxes T1-Rs.255 x 40 x 17's.Anyone agree with this? Or do opinions differ on size or tire make? I would like to hear everyone's take.

Price doesn't bother me. I want the best tire. My life is on the line every time I get in my Mustang.

Too many times I seen a front tire blow out causing either a 360 in to the guard rail or an outright flip.I am also considering a 4 point roll cage as well.
You do realise this is suicide right? Not to mention homicide for other drivers. Your GT, no matter how build, was not built to go around corners at 140+ MPH (coilovers or not). Engaging in "bullruns" is a great way to not only kill yourself but minivan mom that pulls out in front of you at 4 am with a carload of kids from grandma's house.

Not to be rude, but what your doing is really stupid. Even in a car that is properly equipped to run at those speeds (like a exotic etc) it's still an insane danger. If nothing else, our roads are simply not up to the task.

This comes from a person that is admittedly a street racer. Running from a stop to say 120 MPH is one thing, but running 140+ MPH and running around curves etc is simply insane.

As far as high speed and tires, look into Pirelli P-zero's. The model name slips my mind at the moment but there is one that is asymetrical and directional. So basically youll have a dedicated tire for each corner of the car.
And as far as tire size is concerned, youll want a staggered size. Meaning narrower tires for the front and wider for the rear. Having tires set-up this way will help you regain control in the event that you might lose control.
But for the fronts Id go with something along the lines of 255/50-17 and for the rears 275/40/17.
-P.
PS: If youre not too keen on Pirelli's, Dunlop's Sport SP8000 is an EXCEPTIONAL tire. Awesome traction in the rain, damn near the grip of a slick when its dry. Ive gone 120 on these tires in the rain with no worries and never got the feeling of any sort of instability.
PPS: Run the fronts between 40-42psi and the rears at 35-38.
of course YOU recommend those. I say go with redass radials. [8D]

my car feels like it's gonna start flying off the ground at 130-140, what is done to your car to make it stable at such speeds, janine?
See the scans. Tell me if you think it will be stable at high speeds.

You are right. No arguement.

I don't go to 140 often. There are, however, times I do and it is when I have a clear highway for as far as the eye can see. As far as people pulling out into the passing lane when your flying down like a freight train, I've had that happen on several occasions, each vividly memorable. Thank God for Brembo, quick thinking and reflexes. I learned not togo nearly as fast in moderate to light traffic as I do in no visibletraffic.

Redass, to make your car stable at those speeds you need to do several things to it. First and foremost are tires. You CANNOT skimp here. Get GOOD tires that are suited for those speeds. Make sure theyre pumped up, you arent going to bang any corners at 32 psi, well you can but youll slide out.
Second, sway bars. Get the fatest sway bar you can for the front, I run a 1 7/8" front say bar. The stock rear ones feels just fine.
Third, suspension. Tokico adjustables or Koni adjustables. Good springs - I use modded motorsport ones, but eibach sportlines are probably a better way to go.
Fourth, alignment. Its SUPER important to have your alignment setup properly. Too much toe and the car will be twitchy, not enough and it wont wanna turn. Then youll also want some good negative camber, it might wear tires a wee bit.
Fifth, chassis bracing. Strut tower brace, subframes, g-load brace, rear shock tower brace, etc.
-P.
