ok lets say im getting cams and sprokets soon... and lets also say i put them in myself (easy job)... and lets also say im a college kid who is pretty much broke (hypethetically, but not really its true) lets say i get the cams in and decide on a place to get a tune. do i need a programmer for them to do that (extra 300-400) or can they just plug into my diagconnector and do a little dance and boom reflash the pcm? what have all you done

When you say sprockets, do you mean adjustable? Because the whole idea behind adj. sprockets is no tune at all! I would get cams and a custom tune which runs about $250-350
You really need to know what you are doing to time those cams

you need a handheld or a chip to piggyback on the stock ecu, and who says swapping cams on modulars is easy?

ok any recomendations on a chip, bc the tuner needs to be held off until the funds come along a few weeks into summer vaca. changing the cams IS easy, making them work is NOT. lol

the reason for an adjustable cam is to make sure the event timing is correct and everything is opening and closing when it should...and to make sure each bank is in phase with each other. The tune will be more about fuel/air ratio curves and setting the correct idle.

also the current crop of adjustable cams is junk! mainly the Fidanza/Comp ones.

ya i prob wouldnt even go with those anyways, just line up some marks on each of the sprockets and chains should do the trick. i bleieve the 99's have a removeable link on the chains so its not a big to get the chain on. am i correct.

you will be safe with VT st 1's, just line up the timing marks properly and don't skip a tooth. You should still degree them but i haven't seen anyone have PTV with them that didn't mess up the install. You can also get away with not getting a tune imediately with them. I know someone who installed them then drove 400 miles to his tuner and ran good.
