Grindind 2nd in 02 gt
I bought an 02 gt about 3 weeks ago and about 1 week ago it started grinding 2nd. It depends on my speed, if i rev it up to say "3500-4000" then it shifts fine. If i shift from 1st to 2nd and slower it will grind a bit, i can shift into 2nd without it grinding but i got to shift slow. But thats not fun at all. When i shift slow i can feel it grab the gear, i cant feel that in any other gear. The car is still under warranty so maybee i will have to bring it to ford. Im used to driving with a hydraulic clutch. Is there any kind of adjustments that might stop this grinding? I guess the previous owner brought the car in for warranty on the tranny before. He said he thinks they changed out 4th gear. He doesnt seem to know much about the car so i dont know for sure. Maybee its a worn out syncro?

Could be a bad syncronizer. At 3500-4000 RPM's it would probably shift smoothly cause' @ about 4000 RPM's on my GT I can shift with out using the clutch (speed shifting). At RPM's too far away from that range it would likely grind if a syncro was the problem.

The reason it doesn't grind at a certain RPM is because the gearing is already syncronized for perfect meshing. There have been times that I've actually pulled the shifter out of gear without stepping on the clutch, synchronized gears will allow you to do that. (Even though B series tranny's aren't supposed to be able to pull them out.)

My f150 used to grind 2nd because my clutch wasnt disengaging all the way. I adjusted the clutch and it stopped. But that was with a hydraulic unit. I dont think there is any adjustments on a mechanical clutch,is there?

Hmmm... Well there isnt a RECALL on this problem, but there is a TSB. If you have less than 36k, bring it in and have youre dealership rebuild youre trans. The TSB says: Some 2001-2003 Mustang vehicles, equipped with TR3650 5 speed manual transmission may exhibit a clash noise and/or a raspy (rough) feel on gear engagement during 1-2 or 2-3 shifts. The transmission may also exhibit a jump-out from 2nd and/or 3rd gear. The condition may be more pronounced when the transmission is colder than 40° F (5° C). TSB #04-15-06. I hope this helps.
