First off, no, your friend's shifter wont work, he has a T-56 transmission so the shifter won't fit your car. You have a T-45 which uses the same shifter as the T-5, so shifters from 1982 to early 2001 will work for your car. Second half 2001 through 2004 use the 3650 tranmission, so they won't work on your car either, so you're just looking for T-5/T-45 shifters.

That said, 90% of the people here, including myself, will recommend the MGW shifter which can be found at www.mgwltd.com. After that the second most popular is the Steeda Tri-Ax, however it's a bit stiffer and notchier, and most people don't like it as much. I've used both and both are great shifters, the MGW just feels a little better for daily driving. I'd probably go for the Tri-Ax for more aggressive driving actually, but I just drive my car around to work and play, no racing. In fact, if you think you want a Tri-Ax, I'll sell you my old one for cheap since it's technically used even though I only used it for a month and shifters are basically impossible to damage or wear down.
