I have a 7.5 rear end on mine (v6 to v8 swap) for almost a year, and no problems as of yet.

the guys at the shop told me the axle shafts were the same...i thought at least the brakes were the same?? i know the housing itself is different since the 8.8 is obviously larger...

so i guess i need to get an axle from a junkyard or something...

Yeah the axle shafts may be the same as you can see I had edited my post because I stated they were the same, but not sure if they have the 28 splines or if it's diff. A 7.5inch rear end should hold up a solid 300hp no problems! You just have to make sure the carrier is built up! I know a few guys running S/C'ers on V8's pushing 500hp in Foxbody's from a 4cyl. conversion with 7.5's and have had no troubles! You just can't run slicks is all, same with the 8.8's

If you build the 7.5" right it will hold up against massive torque and will produce higher power levels to the wheels because its a lighter rotating gear and overall is lighter. Though the 8.8" has more out there for it when it comes to our mustangs but the SHO guys like the 7.5" a lot.

I would get a second opinion on what rear end you have in your car before you go through the heartache of switching it out. Because like already stated your car came with a 8.8 from Ford.

Check out this site it shows a pic of the difference between the 2. Yes it's a Cougar site but it's all the same for the most part. 7.5 and 8.8 Pics
