3.73 gears

3.73 gears
I'm planning on putting 3.73's in my 97 GT. Its an automatic by the way. My question is, my car is a daily driver, and I have a 20 mile highway commute to class about 3 days a week. How bad is this gonna effect my gas milelage and what kind of performance gain can I expect? Should I even bother? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

RE: 3.73 gears
I figure i would go with a 390 to start. the way I see it, a 373 may not be big enough a jump to justify the cost, but a 410 maybe pushing it too far. And, if you get a programmer, it will let you reprogram to fix the speedo Im sure. So 390 sounds Juuuuuuust right. Please forgive me if I am and idiot and dont know what I am saying.

i was planning on getting a chip to recalibrate the speedo. I can also adjust the shift points and whatnot with that too right? Will a chip help me pick a few extra HP?

RE: 3.73 gears
ok, bear with me because I know this is a dumb question, but what is the big difference between 4.10's or 4.30's and 3.73's? I know it has to do with the number of teeth on the gear itself and the pinion, but performance wise what difference will i see and what would be most reasonable for my car and how I use it?

RE: 3.73 gears
Well the difference is all in the RPMs and where you are in the powerband. If you want to have a ton of takeoff but a lower top end then get the 4.30's because it will ALWAYS have the rpms up and as soon as you step on the gas your engine wont have to play catch up because its already there. Now if you get the 3.55's or 3.73's then youe engine will still have to spin up to get into the powerband although not nearly as much with your stock 3.08's or what ever you may have. So if you have an auto, you might wanna look into 4.10's or 4.30's. just my opinion.
Hope this made sense to you.
