Default Gears Installed

Well guys I finally got the gears installed (373's). I like them, but its not what I was thinking it would be. When I bought the car it had 355's in it. The went bad on me, and the dealer put the stock gears back in. When I got the car back I could tell the difference bigtime. Now that I have the 373's its does not seem to be as quick as the 355's did, but then again I haven't driven it hard yet. How long is the break in period or is there a break in period? The car does feel a little smoother though.I guess the new gears and fresh gear oil is the cause. Anyway all is well. In another week or so I'll be sure to open it up.... from a dead stop I'm nailing it 1st through 4th.

I drove my new FRPP 3.73's like a baby for 5 or 6 full heat to full cool down cycles. Slowly ramping up power for first 200 miles. Must admit I've given it full throttle twice from a roll. I have over 200 miles now but will not do burnouts until 300 or 400 miles. Some say 500. Better safe than sorry.

See heres where it gets interesting. I put in 373 from my stock 273's and hated the 373s. First gear was like a tow truck low gear-useless unless your freeing a boat from a sand dune-not likely with a Mustang. Fun to rip out through the first 3 gears and nice to justpass in 5th on the highway without downshifting(big deal)but other than those 2 things dailydriveabilty sucked. I went to 327's which are a factory option on GTs and standard on Cobras. Best all around gear choice I could have made. It took the dead zone out of the hole from a dead spot and put the car up a few hundred rpm when cruising so I hit the powerband quicker without destroying my first gear and basically making it useless. 355's are probably the highest I would go with a 2 valve GT. I am in the minority here for sure though but I do know what you mean.

Wow, first post Ive ever read from someone who didnt like any gearing higher than stock. 3.73s were really that bad in first gear? You only lose about 5 mph at 5800rpm in first between 3.27s and 3.73s

Thanks guys for the replies. I'm sure I'll start to love 'em like I do the Steeda.... man I love my short throw. WhatNO break in period.... are you sure LizzyFan. Honestly I can't see why there should be a break in period for a gear set. Looking at them in the box I can't see why the would need a break in period. I'll give it a week and no longer and then I'm driving it like I stole it. Maybe I go for a long 300 mile ride this weekend then when I get back they will be good and broken in.

you'll not notice a "huge" difference since you know what having 3.55 felt like before.. should have just went with 4.30's... I wish I did[:@][:@].. Don't fear the gear..

I can't believe that you aren't happy with the gears. I would imagine that you just have to wait until you can romp on the gas a little bit, then you'll be happy.

All this talk about just getting gears installed is making me restless. Man I can't wait to get my gears in this Friday.
