Here's Ford's recommended jacking points, they specifically state that the rear should not be lifted by a signle jack under the differential pumpkin...
i still dont know why...its like that on the F series too
i work at discount tire and have jacked probably 1500 ford vehicles from the diff so far....

safety as the car falling on you or driving away? My buddy jacked mine up by the rear end pumpkin today to look at something underneath it and it started to roll a lil bit. so i had to put a brick on the front tire
DON'T EVER JACK A CAR WITHOUT CHOCKING THE WHEELS FIRST!!!!!

It'll save you a trip to the ER or worse, the morgue.....

Always put something in front of the wheel when jacking up the car... and jackstands should always be used! I would imagine they say to not jack from the pumpkin becuase it is not a flat surface... other than that nothing bad will happen... just use jack stands!

I heard that the reason for this is that there is a negative camber built into the rear axle or something of that sort. They say that jacking it up from the pumpkin can mess with that, but I don't really follow that to well :s.

possibly...i have yet to see a problem in like a year and a half
if it had negative camber then how would all the rotating assemblies inside the axels spin?

Cool, since Ford says "don't do it" if I ever need a rear-end I'll have some work done at Discount Tire and make sure I get photos...

Easiest way to remove tailpipes is with the car on jack stands, pop the tire(s) off. Put the jack under the shock mount and remove the shock bolt leaving the jack to support that side of the axle. Then just lower the jack until that sides pipe has enough clearance to remove the tailpipe. Beats the hell out of cutting the pipes. [:'(]
