And its got me a little uneasy about doin my own. What steps should I take to ensure that it doesnt happen? Im assuming the plugs blow because they arent tightened down enough, or the coil pack is loose?

Actually it can be caused by changing plugs on a hot motor. Threads galled due to overtorquing and no anti-seize. High cylinder pressures due to various reasons ie. boost/detonation. Lastly there is only about 4 threads that hold that plug in. Aluminum isn't forgiving at all and if you just he man the plugs in you are waiting for problems.
Use a torque wrench.
Change plugs ONLY on a cold engine
Use anti-seize
COP's have nothing to due with plugs blowing out

Well, the first one i did, engine was cold (hadnt driven the car in a day). didnt use a torque wrench tho, i just tightened it normally, didnt overtighten it. No antiseize tho, i was told it wasnt necessary.[&:]
Did thata week ago, took the car to the track this past saturday and ran it pretty hard, so far so good?

How tight do you guys tighten the plug? I've done the "tighten down by hand, then 1/4 turn tighter with a wrench" Is that about right?

Just take your time and dont force the plug in. If its not going in, dont make it. Buy a swivel for the back two plugs so you can get the right angle on it so it doesnt strip. Its not too bad, just dont rush it. I didnt do the tighten by hand then 1/4 as I dont see how in the hell you could get your hand to the back plugs to tighten them. I simply torqued it down with a ratchet. Im sure theres a certain ft/lbs thats supposed to be used, but I didnt have a torque wrench at the time.

Yeah, i had two of my mechanic friends come with me to autozone, and they pointed out everything id need (swivel, extender, socket), no torque wrench, nor antiseize.
