could this be a tranny problem?

could this be a tranny problem?
My 96 gt (5-speed) is ticking and it sounds like it is coming from right under the center console. It only does it under load. It does not do this at idle and it does not do it when the clutch is in. It is not an exhaust leak. I am 100% sure of that. Could this be a throw out bearing problem? After driving for a few minutes sometimes the area around the e-brake gets really warm. Any thoughts as to what could be the cause of this? I have had the car looked at but the tranny was never checked.

I have the same prob in my 04 with only 28,xxx miles.. i have no idea what it is.. it seems to be really bad when cold.. and gets a little better after warmup.. maybe someone knows what it is.. i have a $100 deductable warranty until 09.. so im not too worried.

Any other ideas? The car has 29k miles on it and hasn't been driven hard so I don't think it is just an issue of wear and tear on the tranny if that is the problem.

I could be wrong but I don't think you have a serious problem. If a bearing etc was ticking and going out it would be gone very shortly, same goes for the temps. If the trans was heating up that much that you notice it it would already be dead.
The TOB usually makes noise when you depress the clutch if its bad... so I doubt thats it. Are you SURE its not an exhaust leak? They can sound pretty strange sometimes, and just checking it under the car when idling/revving is sometimes not enough. Puttinga load on it (plus the car in motion and not up in the air) seems to change leaks, they can be very frustrating to track down.

I am sure that it is not an exhaust leak because I just got the exhaust on this past week and the ticking occured before that and still does it. It is the exact same noise nowas it was before so it had nothing to do with the exhaust. The frustrating thing is that it does not do this when sitting still so I don't know how I will locate it. It did seem odd to me though that the ebrake area gets so hot. I haven't even put a thousand miles on it since I noticed the noise. I really hope it is not anything serious, but it does annoy the crap out of me.

I woud take your shifter bezel off and drive around for awhile. Feel the bottom of the shifter. Its suppose to be pretty warm but if its rediculously hot then its probably a tranny problem.
