Right now i'm thinking intake, heads, head gasket... I don't know. I could get a compression test... do I need that?

Bet it's a blown fire ring on one of your head gaskets. Check for water in your oil (will have a milky look to the oil), Run a compression test, run a leakdown test on your cylinders, and pressure test your cooling system. If any of them our out of spec.probably have a bad head gasket. Have to pull heads, replace both gaskets, and while your at it, consider getting your heads checked and reworked at a machine shop.

do a compression test before anything. That will lead you in the right direction. It will also give you a reason to throw on some ported heads

Call me ignorant but I've never done a compression test, is this something I can do at home?

It is. My friend bought a guage to do a compression test on his truck. I think it plugs into where the spark plug goes. Correct me if I'm wrong. But I'm sure a shop won't charge you much to run one.
