BBK X-pipe : Rattling sound?
I brought my car to the shop a few days ago for muffler swaps (40's to delta 40's), in hopes that it would cure the rattling sound. The guy was extremely reputable for working on Mustangs and he immediately notedthat it was the pipe, saying it was even worse on the 4v engines and was simply due to harmonics.
When he tore the old mufflers off, he shook them and poked the baffles with a screwdriver; they were fine. It was still nice to get the deltas on, though, and he cleaned out my MAF for me too.
But I definitely still have that rattling sound. I LOVE this midpipe; the sound is awesome and I am constantly getting looks on the street. The sound usually only occurs under 2k RPM, and spontaneously. Is there a way to service this noise? I know a lot of your guys' stangs have a BBK x-pipe, so please chime in.

Its just the flowmasters. Not because they are worn but because thats just how they are. A simple pipe (the x pipe) will not make a rattling noise unless its loose or something.
Keep two things in mind.... X pipes dont go well with chambered mufflers... and Flows are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to exhaust. They do sound good but their quality could not be worse.

The thing is....this sound is EXTREMELY loud, almost like there is a bolt in the pipe or something. And it isn't always happening, either. I didn't have this problem when I bought the car a little under a year ago.

funny you should mention this - I have a rattling problem as well. I just have a mac catback but it only happens under 2k and USUALLY when I'm idling out of gear. I just assumed something was loose and I need to get under there and readjust some stuff

I have BBK X catted with Super flows... no noise at all. My work truck a ford 150 with 4.6 makes the very sound you are talking about. I am scheduled for service in a week and I am going to have them look into it. It only happens at low rpms and it sounds like there is a stone rattling around in the cat or pipe. It turns heads at a light... like is that thing going to blow up! lol not that bad.
