Default Possible new purchase?

Hello all,
I spend most of my time over in the 5.0 section, as that is what I used to own. I sold it and am now looking into getting a 96+ GT or Cobra. What years should I stay away from? I want good descent power (around 300) without breaking the bank. I understand that a certain year 4.6L came with a different head set-up which enables more power or something? I am very familiar with Mustangs (I have built 4: 88,89,91, & 67) but they have all been 302 based.

Please fill me in on the basics, and what I need to look for when making my new purchase. I will be buying a newer GT soon, like next week, so please help a fellow stanger. Thanks!

if you wanna start w/ like roughly 300hp go w/ a 96-98cobra :] gotta love the sn-95's but umm yeah the 96-98GT's are a tad slow and require Performance Improved (PI) swaps to match up to the new edge GT's n such...

How expensive are Pi heads? and does it take a long time to swap them?

99-04 gt came with 260hp 302 tq..the 96-97 came with 215hp and 285tq and the 98 came with 225hp and i think 285tq..the pi swap is gonna cost you about 1500 in parts i believe..sounds to me your looking for a 96-98 cobra which you can a good condition with low miles one for 7-10k.

With the prices of 99-00 GTs coming down so hard (have seen 70K mile ones going for 8500 bucks) IMO its better to just get them, instead of buying a 96-98 and doing the work.

On the other hand, you always could by a 96-98 and put in aftermarket parts rather than stock ones. Along with exhaust/intake boltons you should make 300 WHP with aftermarketheads/cams and a PI intake on a 96-98 car (with tune) but its going to be fairly costly (1300 for heads, 600 for cams, 200 for valvesprings, IDK the cost of the PI intake, and then some here and there for gaskets etc).

Yeah I am thinking that I am going to stay with a 5.0 ... Going to look at a 95 tomorrow. I already have aluminum heads, intake, and cam linned up for under 1k. And it will make 300hp easy.
