RE: 3:73 Gear install
Mine are being installed right now as I type. Gears + Deluxe Install kit (wheel berrings) + RP Lube= $350. Install = $350. Don't be fooled by the gears cheap looking $169 price, they can get expensive quick.

You need the insatll kit because it is a good idea to go ahead and replace the bearings while you are in there for added insurance on the rear end, especially on a car that is getting up there in miles.

It depends on how many mile you have. Less than 50k to 60k you don't really need the bearings and maybe the clutch pack; but only IF you are doing the work yourself and don'tconsider opening it up again in 20k to 30k to be a major lifeevent. I just put 3.73s in my relatively "new-to-me" '03 GT at 40k miles, everything looked great including all bearing, the clutch pack, and seals--so even though I had the "kit" on hand I didn't use it and it will sit on the shelf 'til I need it...OTH,if you are paying someone else to do it, and don't care to EVER openthe differentialby yourself, then go for the full Monty...

At 53k it's borderline, I'd have the kit on hand before I opened things up--'twas me I'd go the whole way...As for DIY, quite frankly unless you are reasonably experienced "wrench" I would not recommended it. The tools are not the biggest deal (you'll need a 6-12 ton press, in addition the the calipers and dial indicator), you can get all of that for less than $200 at Harbor Freight. The big deal is experience in setting and checking clearances, the ability to perform meticulous work (meaning the will to take things all apart and start over if it isn't right), and the patience to do all of the above. It's a 4-5 hour job done right without hurrying, plan on 6 just in case...
