HAHA, i know but doing 70mph im tachin almsot 2500, i couldnt even down **** to third if i wanted to, so i would go down to 4th and not have as good pull as 3rd would have....So it sucks
Exactly why I don't have them.....

I've been trying to get that one stickiedhere for moths now....

Wow.... just wow.. I have 4.10's a nitrous and love it. Yes 1st is over quickly but that's what wins 99% of my races. Is 1st gear useless with that much power and 4.10's, nope. Also I have gotten 24.3 mpg on a trip to florida and usually average 21mpg.

2500 at 70 i think is like 3.90? 3.27 arent really enough but if you want it stock its up to you. highest gear id run is 3.55. with the 3.73 cant you start in second or is first gear still usable?

I have 3.90's and I'm at 2400rpm at 75mph.

Hmm I have had similar thoughts. I almost got REALLY tired of my 4.10's. I've never experienced stock gears in a mustang as I bought my car with these 4.10's already in it, but I run out of 1st so fast and I'm right at 2500 at 70 mph where my exhaust drones and sucks my gas down, so I dunno. I've thought about it but then I thought about it and I probably have an advantage over stock geared mustangs and other cars when in a race from a dig.

Im not for or against...but I noticed a trend just now. It seems whenever the higher gears are fought for, it's by saying: when I race....or from a dig.... or ...win. What about the other 90 percent of the time when you are driving normal. How do you like the higher gears then? Does it get annoying at all? What about when you have a girl in the car on a date? Does her neck whip back whenever you press the gas?

Again, I am just curious because I have been thinking baout gears too. I'm leaning towards 3.55's and maybe 3.73's. I race maybe 1 timeevery otherweek. if that.

Hey guys i have had 3.73's for about 5months now, and im kinda sick of them...im thining of going back to stock. My bro has stock 3.27's in his GT, and he can pull 4 till 120, i can only pull it to 100. Plus fuel milage sucks!...So u think i am a fool to change back to stock???
Well 120 MPH is faster than you should be going, but I hear what you are saying.
In general, the more I read these forums the more I realize that there is a string attached to just about every mod.
Some strings are little ones and some are huge.

The question you have to ask yourself is why didn't Ford do XYZ if it is so great?
Most times you will reach the conclusion that it is either $$$$, MPG or emissions.

I've driven quite a few Mustangs and IMHO unless you are interested in racing, gears are a huge headache.
You have the mileage loss.
You have the tranny output shaft(Automatic especially) spinning like crazy, so much so that Lenco installs an oiler port to help with the output bearing.
You have your motor spinning faster, especially on the highway.
You have the potential that the bonehead installing the gears doesn't have a clue.

And for what?
A little more get up and go?
Who cares?
I got over that one when I was 19 and event then I was driving a 6.6L Trans Am.

Save your money for an exhaust system and give your stang some character.

BTW if you are interested in racing and your car is not a DD that spends time on the highway, then gears are exactly what you need.
Great mod for that type of driving.

Nope, in fact I have had similar thoughts recently as I find that 1st gear is over so fast at WOT it's almost unecessary--I'm sure that if I had 4.10s here in Florida (= flat land) 1st would be useless. I won't say I wish I hadn't done it, however like you I'm close to pretty much over it--other than being able tobreak the tires freeeasier when launching I find it really doesn't make much difference...An alternativemight be a TKO500 with a 2.95 1st gear???
You guys are nuts.

The 500 has the 3.27 1st, the 600 has the 2.95. (http://www.ddperformance.com/3550tko5spd.htm) In any case, why the hell would you want 1st to be LONGER? Do you hate launching or just want to be slower in 1st in general?

I can tell you one thing, take your basic boltons only n/a cobra or 2v and put the 600 with the 2.95 first in there and you won't like the results. You simply do not have the power level to pull hard enough thru that gear... I hope you like 2.1+ 60' times.

So far as being able to "only pull 4th till 100 MPH" what are you talking about? Unless your running a 4.30+ gear (instead of 3.73s) you should go 120+ MPH in 4th gear with a stock 5 speed trans. Not sure what your talking about here.

The only disadvantage of gears in reality is when you have to shift into 5th, but in all honesty in a n/a 2v GT you DONT want to be racing anyone at 120+ anyway... because your probably going to loose. Espcially with 3.73s the RPM in 5th is not a very big difference, and I can guarentee you that in the average street race (yes, even from a roll) a 3.73+ geared car is simply faster. You can post up all the "effective torque" bs and all that, but experence proves it on the street.

I am making 420+ WHP with 3.73s, and 1st gear isn't too short. On your average n/a boltons car IMO it was almost too long, simply not enough power to get an effective launch on your average tire (you eitherspin or bog) If your burning it off, (espcially in a n/a GT) your simply either not launching right or your not running a decent tire. Get yourself a set of nitto drag radials and pony up the 300 bucks every 10K miles (big deal) or just pedal it a little until midway thru 1st. Hell, I could even use a little more gear in my car as it is if it wouldn't put me into 5th at the top of the 1/4 mile. (and I didn't plan on making more power later on).

I have 4.10's and I wouldnt change them for anything in the world. EXCEPT 4.30's!!!!!!!!!

My car is a DD, and I have no complaint. 2500rpms at 70mph doesnt really bother me.
