Totally off topic, but just know that the people making 80 bucks an hour isn't the tech in the shop. Unless your going to open your own shop you better plan on starting off making 10-12 bucks and hour and making about 20 in 10 or so years. I seriously considered going auto tech, but its just not a lucrative carrer anymore. The only people that make even decent money are the head techs that have been there a LONG time.

let me break it down for you, rebuild kit for AOD is no more than 225 bucks with clutches and the who shibang. torque converter is about 500-700. the rest is labor. which is why I'm going to be a trans tech...
skilled labor cost lots of mu-lah. but on the other hand, I do think it way steep. go somewhere else. A good local trans shop with smart people who stand behind there work is what i would look for. keep in mind, you get what you pay for usually. my advice would be to no go to the dealer or a place like aamco. you shouldnt be charged more than 2K max.

the hourly going shop rate is what i ment but i guess it didnt come off that way. And if you do own your own small shop and do some of the work....well there you go.

The guys comparing Manual rebuilds to auto...Automatics have many more moving parts & are much more complicated to rebuild, so giving out your costs are absolutely worthless in this situation.
IMO, the best thing you can do with an automatic is to buy a new one rather than rebuild. Why? Manufacturer warranty + you can't verify exactly what the shop is replacing, will they only be replacing what's broken or will the transmission be fully rebuilt regardless of what they say they will do.
Shop around for quality of work when it comes to your transmission, not price.

Thats not soo outrageous. I was quoted 1800 to rebuild my transmission. and it cost me $1000 to get the clutch done. So all together, $2800 isn't that outrageous. Maybe a little expensive, but if they aren't especially good at our cars, that is not all the crazy.

Go somewhere else, and have them follow the guidelines set forth in chapters 7 thru 12 in the tech articles section on tccoa.com. Build a bullet proof trans for under $1200, and then throw in a DirtyDog high-stall converter for another $800 or so.

As far as a mechanic, just do your research, ask questions about the parts they use and who does the work.

RE: $2800 for transmission repair?
4R70W is just a revised version of the AOD-E. In the end they are the exact same thing....and they can be built up to be monsters if you know who to talk to. Rebuilds are deffinatly cheaper than a new tranny. If i were you i would go find someone quickly who can build it and supply a warrenty also.
