Default Weak Clutch???

So I'm new to mustangs. I just bought a used 01 GT with about 70k on it.

Since I bought it I thought the clutch was weird, but people tell me it is because it is a cable and I'm used to hydro clutches???

Anyway, some days this clutch will hook up and the car moves, some days the car is dog slow. I would say 80% of the time the clutch is really stiff. So today, the clutch is so light, I feel I could push it with my finger. Plus, I would say that the pedal is about an inch or more "higher" than it used to be. What's up with that? Would replacing the cable/quadrant do anything? Or should I look into a new entire clutch set up?

I drive a lot of city driving, and I'm about 99.9% sure that the guy who owned the car before me, beat on it pretty good.

Also, how do I tell which tranny it has. I think the production date was 2/2001.

Thanks

As long as it doesnt slip, dont replace it. You can reset the clutch by pressing it to the floor and slipping your toe off so it shoots up. Only do this when the car is off. It worked for mine for a little while. A new cable and quadrant might also make a difference.

Man, i have an 00GT with about 34,000 on it and i have the same exact problem. Some days the clutch feels to bite pretty well, then other days it feels like a wet sponge under my left foot. I'm also really curious as to how to fix this, i wouldnt care because the clutch works fine but it just bugs the crap outta me!!!!!!!

My 02 GT has 106,000 on it and still has the original clutch. It has been doing the same thing you described, for about the past 40,000 miles. Sometimes it seems to grab really hard 1st thing in the morning. By the time I get where I'm going is much softer and smoother.

Yea, but for some reason i just like the feel of a real stiff clutch. Whats a good reliable clutch that has some pretty good stiffness but is still good for everyday city driving?

Last year, I did some research on clutches (cause mine had a lot of miles for the original) and ended up buying a SPEC Stage 1 kit. People I knew had good things to say about SPEC and the kit came with everything (disk, pressure plate, TO Bearing, pilot bearing, and alignment tool). Unfortunately I really can't give you more feedback on it. It's still sitting on the shelf in my garage (along with the Steeda quadrant, cable, and adjuster). The stock clutch is still holding up.

So back to identifing my transmission. It only says "K" under the TR section of the door jam, does that mean it has the 3650? BTW, which is better 3650 or the T45?

So today the clutch is still acting really weak. It almost used to feel that the car would "launch" when starting in first, now it just kind of moves ahead. I haven't ever detected any slipping. A whole new cable, quandrant, adjuster is less than $100, would I feel a difference?

How intense in replacing the cable? Is this a driveway project?
