96 GT annoying tick while driv
Hey all, little problem I can't seem to find a solution for. Here is the situation. I have a 1996 GT convertible 5-speed, and as I'm driving, I can hear a steady ticking sound coming from what sounds like the engine compartment on the passenger side of the car, or almost sounds like it's right inside the dash on the passenger side. The tick goes away when I accelerate, or as soon as I let my foot off the accelerator, but when I keep the accelerator steady at a cruising speed, no matter how fast I'm going, there is a non-stop tick, and it bugs the HELL out of me! I am hoping somebody else knows a solution to this problem so I can fix it before my car drives me insane. Appreciate your guys' input.

You could try driving the car with the hood up and have your friend sit on the engine to see what's happening. J/K

What about if you're in neutral and hit the gas, does the ticking start up or is it only when you are driving?

HA! I offered my buddy 20 bucks to do just that, can you believe he wouldn't help me out?? Something about a trip to the hospital...what a wuss. lol. Anyway, it only happens when the car is in one of the forward gears, and only when cruising, not under acceleration. No tick in neutral. It's very odd, because it's not coming from the transmission. It almost sounds like it's coming from the throttle body, or right inside the dash, in that general area. It's not a valve....I haveno idea what it could be.

If you think its coming from around the TB then I would check the cables, check the idle speed solenoid and the throttle linkage - could be bad. Or maybe its something simple like a loose nut or bolt somewhere.

Another possibility is just a loose screw in the dash but I would think it would make noise all the time. However, my parent's pontiac had a loose connector in the dash that would twirp during idleing and cruising but not acceleration. Good luck though.
