4.6 or 5.0
this might be a dumb question, but im a new ford guy, what exactly is the diff between the 4.6 and the 5.0 besides .4L , i mean is stroke the same or cylinder wall diam? and is the 4.6 as good as the 5.0 as far as power and also dependability and HP potential, also why did ford switch to the 4.6 in that the 5.0 is time tested to be a good motor and 302 has been around like forever.

RE: 4.6 or 5.0
The 4.6 litre are in the 95 and up mustangs they are 281 cubic inches. They stopped making the 5.0 (302 cubic inch) motor in 95. The main difference is that the 4.6 is an overhead cam set up either single or dual overhead cam. GTs have single over head cam along with saleen, roush. The dual overhead cam is left for the Mach 1 and the cobra. Dual overhead cam is the way to go. Much better airflow throuh the heads. I have a 2003 GT and an 89 LX personally I like my 03 GT better but I love them both. There are a hell of alot more parts out for the 5.0 since its been tested and developed for 25 years now. The 4.6 is rather new, I love the unique sound the 4.6's have to offer. You could put pretty much any ford engine in your mustang as long as its rear wheel drive. So buy an old fox body mustang four banger and buy a cobra crate engine and drop it in. And the engine would be under warrenty.

I agree with going with the 4.6 Cobra motor.
You can make 100 more rwhp than the SOHC in the GT, and the stock bottm end is much stonger.
When I set up my next car, I'm definitely building on a Cobra block.

U can find an awesome 96-98 cobra for the price of a 99+GT. Just make sure you are sitting down before you open the insurance bill if you get the cobra[sm=icon_quiet.gif]. they wanted 240 a month(full coverage), when i asked about a 98 cobra. I dont guess it helped that i was 17 at the time.

hey, for the 2 different 4.6 motors... can you take the 4v heads from the cobra/mach 1 and put those heads on the 4.6 GT 2v? if this was possible i would love to do that mod instead of getting a whole new motor later on in a few years.
