03 Cobra engine in 96 gt...?
hey guys, don't know if i'm over my head on this one...
i saw an 03 Cobra engine for sale earlier, and i got me thinking. i have a 96 GT with 120,000 miles on it, and it's begining to show the effects of being run pretty hard. how difficult would it be to drop an 03 Cobra engine in a 96?? i i know i would need to upgrade a lot of other stuff, but i am just talking about engine mounts, wiring harness, ect...worth the time? worth the money??

Assuming you can find an engine/tranny for 8-10k go for it. Motor mounts are the same I believe but you also need the computer and wiring harness. If you cant do the swap yourself its definately not worth it. Most 96-98 gt owners that want to swap engines just go with a newer PI engine or a 96-98 cobra engine.
If you really want to go to the trouble of an engine swap instead of just buying a cobra or somthing, I would rather get a new forged shortblock and get my own blower. jmo though.
well I dont know everything you need but I do know it wouldnt be worth the money. I would love to see it done, wish I could do it. You will need the engine (of course), transmission, and wiring harness (re-wire everything). I would also say that you needed a new driveshaft, rear-end, and axles. I know the rear-ends in the 96's , whichhave 8.8in axles, are strong I just dont think they would take that much power and abuse. You would be better off buying a Cobra than spending that much money and time on fabricating. There are some good deals out there for 03-04 Cobra engines but the average price that I've seen is around $7,000. Though I have seen one out of a wrecked Cobra for $5,900 including the transmission and wiring harness. Your best bet is to buy a short block with forged internals and build it from there to your standards and horsepower level. Why spend thousands of dollars for 390hp? Use the search button on here and find some other posts on this topic and you will realize its not worth it. Oh and I have a 96' Mustang GT too with 120k on it.
