Gear Selection

RE: Gear Selection
some people will tell you 300 for the gears and install.. local performance shop here did mine for $500. included the price of the gears, fluids and labor. the guy was awesome too. had them done in under an hour, that's while taking a bunch of breaks talking to people that came in.

RE: Gear Selection
Gear choices depend entirely on what you are trying to achieve and what you are willing to sacrifice.
Most of us who picked the 4.10s did so because they will just about max out fourth gear in the quarter.
Honestly, I'm not crazy about the 4.10s in my car. They are not practical at all. They rev out too quickly and they suck on the highway. Yeah, you can keep the RPMs relatively low (2,000-2,500) if you keep it in fifth and go slow, but you can forget about downshifting. I don't find that to be "practical". <---- just MY opinion
I do have a blast driving around town though and they are perfect for the odd weekend at the track.
However, there is only about a 200 RPM difference between 3.73 & 4.10 ratios....so why would anyone bother with 3.73 on a bolt on n/a 99+ GT? You are already sacrificing the RPMs, so you may as well get the most bang for your buck.
Personally, I'm a fan of the 3.55s in these cars....but then again, it's not worth it to change from 3.27 to only go 3.55

jdaniel did a post of his long **** trip with 4.10s. you won't lose nearly as much mpg as you think.

RE: Gear Selection
i plan on buying my baby a bottle or getting a blower. i'm just waiting a bit for warranty to go out.
and those 200 or so rpm's can make a big difference in the long run. it was only 200 or so going from my stock to the 3.73s. now i'm at 2000rpm by 65.

Depends on how fast you wanna go. If you like to drive 80-90 mph, you will loose economy. If you drive at 65, I agree it isn't that bad. It is definitly harder on your engine with 4.10's on the freeway, especially if you keep your rpms at around 3000 for extended periods. -And that's where you are with 4.10's going faster that 80 mph. It comes down to gearing balance. A more balanced gear, like 3.55's or 3.73's gives you a bit of both worlds. Plus, with 4.10's on the street, you'll burn out your clutch a lot faster than if you had 3.55's. 4.10's = more $ spent on gas and wear items in your car, like tranny synchros and clutch.

One more thing, does anyone know where I can get some directions for gear install on a 99 GT?

If your gonna stay N/A then you should get 4.10's or 4.30's... anything less and you'll be disappointed I promise (this only applies with certainty to 2001.5+ GT's)
I'll tell you the same story I tell alot...
A while back I met a good friend of mine through this site, he asked me about my gears (4.10 at the time). He said he was wanting to get 3.73's but some people told him to get 4.10's at least... he wasn't sure what to do - he feared the gear. Well, I let him drive my car with the 4.10's and you know what that fugger did? He went out and bought 4.30's!

65mph @ 2200
70mph @ 2400
75mph @ 2600
80mph @ 2800
what year is your car?
