smoke problem

my friend has a 96 gt non pi. its got 172k on it, and when he sits idle for like 2-3 min i guess it loads up. when he takes off it lets out a cloud of smoke but it smells like it running rich. its black smoke theres a little oil in there but mostly like carbon or something i think? anybody have any ideas. thanks

black smoke means rich, blue smoke means oil, white smoke means coolant. does the car run rough at all, if so you may want to check for maybe a leaking injector or maybe a faulty pressure regulator.

the car actually runs pretty good really for the high mileage it has.

my 96 is having the same problem. do a compress check on the car or a leak down test. yea mine sits at idle in a parking lot or stop sign or something and when i hit the gas it smokes pretty good. the valve guides could be going bad or the rings are bad. in my case the rings arnt doin so hot. but the car still pulls a 14.6 stock so i cant complain
