synthetic oil

RE: synthetic oil
sorry, i didn't do the search... but just going off what I've heard before and also what happened to me. I'd heard that adding synthetic to an engine with higher mileage, and thus older gaskets, you would risk having the car start developing leaks. I added the synthetic Amsoil to my 91 thunderbird lx w/ HO 5.0 when I was at 95K miles, and by the time I hit 122k i had leaks develop around my oil pan. In retrospect, I think that still doesn't mean much, cuz at 122K I would say its time to switch out an oil pan gasket anyways right? Aside from the possible leak that might have been caused by the switch or maybe something else, the benefit of having the synthetic in there was worth it imo.

Don't worry toomuch about the leak thing. It's blown way out of proportion and is a myth for the most part.
You can switch to synthetic, sure, but if you're so worried about wear why didn't you use it before? It's better then conventional, but good clean oil regardless willhelp your engine last a long time. It might just add a little bit more life if you used it all along. I don't see why using it now suddenly is a big benefit.

It's your money, but its a day late, buck short for any real benefits to the engine. Changing your conventional oil regularly is more beneficial.
Syn has some very good attributes, but unless you are driving the thing REALLY hard all the time or in extreme heat conditions, conventional will serve you just fine at this point in the game.
As for the leaks, it is true, but uncommon.

RE: synthetic oil
okay to settle this thing i know first hand in my 01 GT i changed from conventional oil at 35k miles, to synthetic and i had a heck of a hard time it would stall, it would smoke, and it finally left me dead one day at work i had roll back come get it and it had pushed all the deposits that conventional oil has, and pushed them through my engine, Syntheic is only good from the very beginning miles i would say 10K and Under! Because it will push all the sludge and build up through the engine and cause break down on the deposits! Syntheic does this because it is a super clean oil! Stick to conventional oil! But thats Just me!
