Default Premium vs. Regular gas

I have a 98 Mustang GT with 53000 miles and no mods and I wanted to know if I needed to use premium gas or if I could use regular 87 octane without harming my engine? Are there any major drawbacks to using regular? Was the car designed to be use reg or premium fuel? Thanks for the help

Ford recommends 87 octane. Unfortunetly, in my area I cannot run 87 without severe pinging at WOT...</P>

I can get away with 89 though. No harm done in running premium either..</P>

87 is recommended by Ford, but once you put a chip in it...premium<IMG src=smileys/smiley16.gif border="0"> <edited><editID>GSXRIntensity</editID><editDate>37885.0912384259</editDate></edited>

Gixxer's soon to be purchased mods:</P>

Nope, no performance gains to be had by running premium fuel when you don't need it. You won't get better gas mileage or any more hp by doing it. All octane rating is a formula that calculates the fuels ability to resist detonation, not fuel quality. </P>

all cars can run on 87 unless noted by the manufacture...with timing @ 10 89 octane is a good choice.... higher compression engines will benifit from the high octane...as a poorly maintaned car might need higher octane due to carbon build up and a slight raise in compression....personally I never run 87 in anything I own not even my lawn mower *L*
