It helps with overheating...if you live in a place like me in SoCal where it gets 100*+.
It basically lets the coolant into your motor when it reaches 180*, rather than the stock...which I think is like 190* or 200*. It makes the car run longer without coolant...so a 180* will be better.
Not entirely a waste...it does something, at least.

i see they offer 170 is that too low? im in michigan dont get too hot here, should i change the fluid while im doing this? is it easy to install?

As for temperatures, I don't see why you would really want to go down. Changing a thermostat does very little, and with a cooler thermostat, the heat wont get as hot. Living in Michigan I'd leave my thermostat stock probably.

I put one in my car and it runs a lot cooler, which in my op. is better.
Your car will run its best between 150-180 deg.
Its just 10$ for an improvement, even though its not huge... its still a step forward. Thats just my opinion.
