Broken oil filter?
Hey donkeys...
I changed the oil in my Cobra today. Something strange had happened to my car a couple nights ago. Upon coming home from 180 mile trip, my Cobra was ticking like a ***** on a busy friday night in Vegas.
My first thought was the dreaded 03/04 Cobra head tick. I got the mechanics ears out and couldn't locate the tick anywhere in the top end. I crawled underneath the car and listened before and after the cats. No noise.
I couldn't locate the tick, I put the ears on my oil pan. No noise. I decided to put the mechanics ears on everything I could. I finally hit the oil filter and BAM! TICK TICK TICK TICK. It had an irratic tick/rattle to it.
I changed the oil and went with a Motorcraft filter rather than another Fram. Sure enough, the noise is gone. To my surprise the Fram filter appeared to be failing. The griton it for youto grab onto when installing or removing was crushing in my fingers. Alsowhere the grit wascrushing, there was oil surrounding it.Once I got the filter loose and drained all the oil, I shook it and was able to duplicate the rattle/tick noise I was hearing.
This is the second time I've had this issue. I previously had this issue with a Carquest oil filter over a year ago.
What's the deal? What could possibly be the cause of the oil filters making this noise? My oil pressure appeared fine, the engine made no other unusual noise & the oil appeared to be in great shape.

RE: Broken oil filter?
We use Mobil 1 oil filters at our work. Possibly the check valve had busted loose which is bad, especially in our oil dependent modern motors. I have had issues with Mighty and Fram filters, they will crush under the pressure of my frip or a bandwrenhc, no bueno. Use Motorcraft, Mobil 1, amsoil, top qaulity filters and you should not have this problem.

Yeah I'd switch to a amsoil, mobil 1, k&n, or motorcraft (probably in that order). ALOT of people have had problems with Fram filters. Me personally I've never used one so I can't tel you from personal experience. Just spend the few bucks more on a good filter.

ive held a cutaway of a fram in my hand. it has paper end caps, this shows the poor quality of the filter, the paper end caps erode and can in some cases cause catastrophic failure. a high quality filter generaly has metal end caps.

Yea, stick with motorcraft they are the best and what of course Ford recommends, because they make it for your Ford only. Fram makes flitesr for everything not just one make of car, and fram isnt that great, if you didnt want to stick w/ motorcraft go with k/n or molible one, but motorcraft will be the cheapest and best.
