Default brakes

So I usually don't drive very fast ('03 gt) but today I decided to go to the back roads and get some speed going. Well I was at around 100ish maybe a little faster and I was a hill comming up. I pushed the brakes down and the car slowed but not as much asI would assume. Then, I slowed to abbout 65-70 and tested the breaks again. Slammed on em... The car took a pretty long time to stop till i felt the brakes "lock" and then I skreeched to a halt. Now I don't have much experiance with these speeds. I would assume this is normal. Are the mustang brakes usually like this? How are the cobra's compared to this?

at those speeds "cold" brakes take a long time to stop. as they heat up they pads grab them harder. if you have ever seen a road racing event the cars cant brake worth a crap at the start, adventually if the rotors start glowing it actually dosent take much to lock the wheel up completely.

You look like you have some good mods going, why not get some brakes? Get the 01 Bullitt brakes or Cobra brakes. They don't cost too much, they look better, and the stop soooooo much better than stock. Could be a good next step for you.

On another line of thinking, if he got slotted and drilled rotors, would they heat up quicker and then stop the car quicker? I know they would cool down quicker, but what about getting up to the correct temp? There is less mass than with other rotors and it seems to me that they could heat up a bit faster. Is that right, or am I speaking out of my rear end?

heated up brakes do not stop better... heated up brakes are called "brake fade". Glowing rotors do not help you stop faster... they just mean your rotors are WAY to hot.

+1 on brake fade.

Disc brakes with an anti-skid system are not supposed to lock up to a point that you can screech to a halt. Does the brake pedal go down close to the floor? Do you have to pump your brakes? You might want to check you brake fluid anyway.

+1 also on the Cobra brakes. Its an easy mod. It increases your braking power. And its a fairly inexpensive mod if you need brakes anyway.

Hot brakes do not help you stop better.

Check your brake fluid... check your pads. Might even want to look into some SS brake lines if you dont want to do the brake upgrade.

simple solution, cobra brake kit + hawk or ebc green stuff pads and change brake fluid.

It felt likeI had to push it to the floor. It would slow down quickly (ish) butI assumed it would have been a faster stop. BTW the brakes respond very well at speed less than 40 mph. Maybe im just not used to braking at thoes speeds.

It sounds to me like you're low on brake fluid or have air in the lines.
