Is it really that much of a pain in the *** to take out the engine on these cars? Wouldn't it be worth it to rent a cherry picker and engine stand and do all your work from there?
Thats the better idea, no its not all that hard.

That is a lot of time and effort for an almost guarenteed failure. I have no idea how you plan on replacing them with the engine in the car. It's not a question if your crank needs to be turned, if the bearings are hurt, there is no question...cheap insurance.

You are going to go through all that effort, when it'll be easier to just pull the motor...
