Default Lash Adjusters / Stem Seals

1. Has anybody actually replaced these with the camshafts in place and the engine in the car. I know that it CAN be done, but i'm wondering if it is a PITA doing it this way? I'd prefer to not remove the cams if i don't have to.

2 . Wheres a good place to get new lash adjusters and valve stem seals?? I've done a little searching but only turned up results for the 5.0.

Thanks guys.

I don't know about removing them without removing the cams, but I do know that you can get them from MMR.

You can remove the lash adjusters without removing the cams but you need the special ford spring compressor to do it.

Yes, you can put the lash adjusters in with the cams in. If you have the "ladders" across the cams, you will have to loosen them a little, especially the one at the back of the head (firewall) so you can tilt the cam up a little for the front lash adjusters to slip under the bridge. Don't let the cam gear slip a link. You just need to roll the cam gear (crankshaft if the head is on the engine) so that the lobe is away from the lash adjuster before it can slip under it. It will work, I just didthis recently.

That really isn't the proper way to do it. Use this tool http://www.toolrage.com/prodView.asp?idproduct=4464. That compresses the spring so you can pull the cam follower out and then remove the lash adjuster. Just be carefull with this tool if you force to much and don't pay attention to what your doing you can bend the valve. They do sell a spring stop to go with this tool that will prevent that but I can't find it.

Sorry. I was thinking about cam followers, not the lash adjusters. Oxfordgt sets me straight again. (But you CAN put in the cam followers with the cam in place!)

Yeah thats why you use this tool. The cam has to be bolted down inorder to use the tool.

after looking into this more i'm starting to wonder if it is worth the labor. I'll be replacing the Timing chain tensioners/guides along with the oil pump soon, but i'm not sure that i want to tear into the top end as well.
