Default am i getting screwed?

my car has been making a clicking noise for some time now. it has been diagnosed as the timing belt chain. Now ive taken it to 3 mechanics one said 600 but i didnt like the guy so i dont want to take it there and the other 2 said 900 and one guy said 1200. I think that is outragous am i wrong? does it really cost this much?

It's a lot of work. The front cover takes a few hours to come off. Especially if they've never done it before. I'll do it for $300.

There are some write ups on it. Have a look around and see if you think you can handle it.

I wouldn't do it for less than $500 and a case of very good English ale...Off the top of my head it includes (and I'm sure I missed something):
[ul][*]Pulling the valve covers (and the brake booster to the get the driver's side off);[*]Remove the fan;[*]Remove the drive belt;[*]Move AC. power steering out of the way;[*]Pull the idle pulley assembly;[*]Remove the crank pulley and oil seal;[*]Remove oil pan bolts on the front;[*]Remove thefront cover;[*]Pull coils and plugs;[*]Position to TDC #1;[*]Have or get a camshaft holding tool;[*]Yank and replace the chains;[*]Make sure it's timed right an put it all back together;[/ul]
Wait, $750 and a case of good ale...

You don't have to do all of that stuff.

Can you post a video or soundclip of the noise?

And have you personally purchased a Mechanics Stethoscope to isolate the noise YOURSELF before you invest money in repairs?

you also dont have to go tdc, remove chains or do any timing if you know what youre doing. our timing chains are tough, just a few steps

its not a hard job at all... i'd do it for 200 + parts...

you have to remove valvecovers, coil packs (easier to get the valve covers off that way, intake tube, electric fan, crank pulley, water pump pulley, a/c and power steering, and the timing cover... timing it wouldnt take more than 5-10 minutes and they it starts going back together. the timing cover gasket i would reccomend replacing but the valve cover gaskets are fine how they are, ive reused mine many times.
