Hey man. Sounds like your on a budget. I have the answer. Forget what they told you. $300 is enough per month to get started. First off, its time to put royal purple synthetic oil in the car. Next, cold air intake, underdrive pulley kit, Possibly upgrade to 3.73 gears in the rear. That will give you about 15-20 RWHP. Not to sure exactly but it will make a difference. Then its up to you to put a bit away for the exhaust because your car needs to breath. Then if you want to get fancy you can buy one of the flash tuner chips which run for about $375. They give 17RWHP and 20 FT-LBS on stock GTS. Thats all for now. Best of luck.

Was this reply a joke?

If those kind of numbers apply im probably right around 500rwhp [&:]

With a tuner, synthetic oil and intake and pullys, youll be lucky to get 15 additional peak horsepower. Remember your horsepower over RPM is a curve, and companies will claim their product adds X HP, but it may be at 1000rpm.... so your car may not dyno any higher as far as peak horse power goes. I think 5.0 mag had a chart at one time that proved a diablosport tuner added only 1 peak HP, but added some more low end power.

Hey dude, I was in the same spot you are around 2 years ago. I'm with silversol81,
PI is the way to go
I got my PI stuff one by one, remember patience is the key word. Look around Ebay, you will find PI heads for $300-$400 w/cams and a PI intake for $100. (50-60rwhp for less than $800, priceless) I did it but it took me a year and a half to get everything, but I did go a little bigger with Ported heads, 274h comp cams and a typhoon intake. Best of luck, PM me if you have any questions?

PS: Mine is a 98 GT
