99' Cobra (IRS gay???)
When I was looking for a new car (before I bought my 03 GT) I drove a 99' Cobra and I loved it. I drove it the first time when it was raining and didn't really have the chance to get on it at all, also I didn't take it on the highway and I should have. So after I put some serious thought into buying it I decided to drive it again. The next time I drove it I went down the highway and it felt fine just granny shifting. Then I started to get on it a bit. at 60 mph dropping from 5th to 3rd it proved to have all the power but once in the gear if you stabbed the gas just a little and then let off it would make a really wierd clunking noise. It didn't do it everytime in 3rd but did it more in 4th and everytime in 5th. If you were in 5th with the clutch out at 60 mph/2,000 rpms and stabbed it or acceled quickly it would make the sound.
It was a 99' Cobra with 68,000 miles on it and they wanted 11,000 for it at a little poe dunk dealer. Very clean car and ran strong other then the noise.
Has anyone else ever experianced this??? I heard it could be common with the IRS. But it sounded like it was coming from the front pass. side of the car everytime and nothing to do with the rear.

I have had this same thing happen on a 98 Cobra that I worked on and the same thing happened. The rear right control arm bushing was completely gone, and it was metal on metal. That is why it clunks and makes wierd noises. You might want to check that out. It's not that big of a deal.

Yeah, the 99+ Cobras all came w/ IRS.
Kinda makes me wish they had it on the 99+ GT's. It's amazing how much better of a ride it is. And those rear CV's can take a serious beating..
Probably better left for the street and not the track though.. Solid rear axles suck.. Like riding in a pick up truck..

00 Mustang GT - Too slow to race, so far......

LOL take that IRS to the track with some slicks and see how long those half shafts hold up. The IRS is meant for AutoX racing and not for serious takeoff's also. They may ride better bt in no way is it drag performance oriented.

Sounds like maybe U-joints to me. For what it's worth I had a similar prob with an old truck I had. Sounded just like that and it was hard to find out what it was because it sounded like it was coming from somewhere it shouldn't be. Get under there and take a look. Wiggle the shaft around, if it's as loud as you say, you may be able to see some play in the joints.

my 99 GT does it too... if ur at low RPMS relly in any gear and tap the gas it clunks around... i think its ok since its so common... i think it may be tranny mounts though... i changed my Dshaft to a ford racing alum dshaft and it still does it... when i get my clutch changed... whenevr that is... im gonna change the tranny moutsn too ... thats what i figure it is... not so much the rear end
